This guide is designed to assist faculty in creating file formats that are easily accessible to students and to assist students in accessing files of various formats.

File Format

Faculty Creation Alternatives

Instead of saving the file in the regular format listed in the left column, use one of the options listed in this column

If you need to open a file of the type listed in the left column, use one of the options listed in this column

Microsoft Word document (.doc)

In Word, go to File -> Save As and choose Rich Text Format (.rtf). Some formatting might be lost.

In Word, go to File -> Save As a Web Page.

Create an Adobe PDF file by clicking on the icon in the toolbar at the top of the Word window or by going to File -> Print and setting the printer Name to Adobe PDF. Requires Adobe Acrobat Professional (or OpenOffice, or a Mac) which should be installed on all faculty computers on campus.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word Viewer 2003, free download, allows viewing but not editing

OpenOffice.org Writer, an open-source (free) alternative to Microsoft Office capable of opening, editing, and saving .doc files

 

Microsoft Word 2007 document (.docx)

In Word, click the Office button and go to Save As and choose Word 1997-2003 format (.doc) or Rich Text Format (.rtf). Some formatting might be lost.

In Word, go to File -> Save As a Web Page.
