Microsoft Office

Using Microsoft Office

  • Microsoft Office is available, free of charge, for home use by all faculty and staff. Visit the Technology Support Center in Lee S-142 or contact training@edison.edu for more information.
  • Free alternatives for students include OpenOffice and Google Docs
  • Office 2007 is installed in all Edison College computer labs and in the Faculty Tech Center workstations.
  • Faculty and staff can get Office 2007 installed on College computers after taking an Office 2007 Basics workshop and then requesting installation through the Help Desk.

What's new in Office 2007

  • The Office Button
  • The Ribbon
  • Tabs
    • Contextual Tabs
  • Live Preview
  • Quick Access Toolbar
  • Mini Toolbar
  • New file format*

*The file formats for many Office programs are now different and end in an x. For example, Word documents in Word 2003 and earlier were .doc files, with Word 2007 they are .docx files. Word 2003 cannot open .docx files. A computer that does not have Office 2007 installed can still open Office 2007 files with the free Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack. Alternatively, when working in Office 2007 you have the option of saving as a 2003 compatible file. See the Important information about sharing Office documents link below for more information.

PowerPoint Enhancements

These are some programs and products that are specifically designed to work with Microsoft PowerPoint to provide additional functionality.

  • Impatica - reduces file size, allows for easy sharing of presentations online, prevents presentation modification
  • Turning Point - student response system

To get higher quality images when saving slides as jpg or png files, first, modify the registry to increase the exported dpi to 300 (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827745/en-us), then, go to Page Setup in PowerPoint to set the output size (see
http://www.techsmith.com/learn/camtasia/5/indepth/saving-ppt-as-images.asp). For assistance with this process submit a help desk ticket or contact the Technology Trainer.
